Here’s a simple project that looks great, and could easily burn up some of that scrap wood you’ve been hoarding for years. This elegant trivet will grace your table, and you can be sure friends will be asking for trivets for their tables, too. Download this as a PDF here Prepping the Wood Check the
Hi Louisa – Boxes – small, medium and large – sell well. There’s enough designs on Pintrest to keep you busy. Most of my small boxes I make with a scroll saw and saw out the center. Google “SCROLL SAW BOXES.” I use a different type hinge/thing. Shoot me an email and I will show you how to make the hinge feature in 1 minute or less.

It’s a little strange but you can charge premium prices for birdhouses and people are ready to pay for it. People who want to enjoy birds coming to the garden, attach a high value to a functional and nice looking bird-house. And who doesn’t really want pretty birds coming and chirping in their gardens. Therefore, birdhouse is one of the top-selling woodworking projects.
A birdhouse is simply an example of the numerous simple and attractive wood projects you can make for the garden and the outdoors. Other examples are pot holders, garden chairs, trellis, garden storage boxes, planters, pet bowl stand, small tables, benches and so much more. Garden projects is an enjoyable and easy woodworking niche to work in.
The best advice I could give you is to learn WordPress or find a friend who can help you figure it out. Once the light bulb goes off there will be no stopping you, you will have the power in your own hands to provide what your end user needs and to educate them about the benefits and your products value – in a selfish, wasteful, throw-away society who expect everything delivered yesterday and expect to pay dirt cheap prices for your skills and repetitive hard work. End of rant….Sorry but I just had to comment. I know what it’s like, don’t lose hope!

It’s given me some ideas to try and bring some creativty while i’m on a dud for crafting stuff to sell. If anyone needs any marketing advise i’m happy to help some fellow wood workers along the way. The most awesome thing i’ve made is a goblet which my college stole. 😛 but I’ve not thought of making boxes so that should be interesting try 🙂
A spatula may not look like a typical lathe turning project but, in this case, it is. The lathe is used to shape the handle and add accents. We’ll show you, step by step, how to make a wooden spatula. Getting started Lay out the spatula shape. Mark out a line 4” from the end
Do try a couple of things before you start to think that they are difficult or won’t work. It may take some time finding a local place to sell your crafts to. But then that relationship could be worth a long term source of extra income, so why not.. As for selling online, if you are making small crafts, selling is easier than ever before. You can read about selling on Etsy here.

Wondering if you are still hanging in there Scott? One thing I notice woodworkers often do when getting started (including myself) is they sell their hand made items way too cheap, it doesn’t help anyone except the customer. You say yourself that they sell as fast as you can make them. Put your prices up! Double or even triple, the amount of orders may slow down but you will be doing yourself a favour. Don’t bother with Etsy or Craigslist or local markets in my opinion. Build it up for yourself to make money not making the giants even richer from all your hard work. I’ve been selling my woodwork online since 2004, before all these giants came along. I feel I have the experience to offer advice if anyone is interested. Trust no one! The internet has become a place for giants to make money off you (Facebook, Etsy, GoogleAds, Amazon…… the list goes on.) Don’t let them take your money, learn how to use them to your advantage instead of being a sucker and paying them money to grow even bigger while you stay the same size. They don’t care about you, they only care about their own business models. Grow your own business brand and ignore anyone who appears to want to help you, especially if their main business is making money online. That’s all they care about! Not you. Invest your time and money in yourself, your own website – not others and you will succeed, providing you are doing what you love and are passionate about.
Hi Eva – Lots of folks rent space in upscale flea markets/craft stores to sell their projects. I have not had to do that yet since I have had good luck selling on Craigslist. BUT< BEWARE that scam artists work Craigslist. When they email you and ask about the "ITEM" rather than the project by name, that's a scam artist, delete them. Do not open them. I have a full time business and my shop time for projects is limited so I don't make a bunch of things. One more tip, lumber is much cheaper at a local saw mill, rather than lumber yards. Check them out in your area. Hot dog! Popular Woodworking’s 2018 Excellence Awards entry is now open. Submissions are accepted now through June 16, 2018. We sat down with Chad Stanton to learn why geometry is a crucial skill for woodworkers and not just another “life-hack.” I don’t know if they have any where you live, but look for a craftmart where you can rent a booth, place your items and they have one cashier to make the sale. One word of warning, brand your items in a way that can’t be easily removed and keep an accurate inventory. There was a time when toys made out of wood were the common thing. These days in most markets they have become a novelty. You only have to ask around to realise the premium, crazy prices being charged by stores for wooden toys for children. Wooden toys are a hot selling category for many reasons. A baby cradle is just one example in what is a very popular woodworking category i.e. baby and children furniture. Parents often like to get special furniture for their children. Most of the times they need it. Babies and children need tables, chairs, storage cupboards, beds and an assortment of other items. Children wooden toys are definitely a profitable niche, but woodworkers are deterred in working in this niche because laws in the US require mandatory testing and compliance with certain safety standards. This is often an expensive process and difficult to engage in for individual woodworkers with small businesses. You will be very surprised at a lot of things about this project. It is very economical to make, simple, takes little time and ends up looking and selling like a premium high quality woodworking item. Not all of these items sell well. It all depends on your location. Always remember the time and money you have into it and whether you can make a profit. With so much cheap merchandise flooding into america from China and other location’s it becomes harder for average Americans to make a profit.
